Coding Classes

Our flagship cohort-based coding program lies at the heart of what we do; we partner with local schools to provide a free, comprehensive coding curriculum for secondary aged girls.

Designed for secondary-aged girls who want to explore programming, our coding classes are a fun way to learn to code in a social, after-school setting. Participants are enrolled in two-year cohorts of 15-20 students who progress through classes/modules together, participate in enrichment workshops, receive specialized tutoring, and mentorship. Our girls learn programming concepts, computational thinking, and develop problem-solving skills and persistence; and are introduced to topics including problem solving, programming, physical computing, and user-centered design, data.

Program Highlights

  • Up to 4 hours of coding weekly

  • Cohort-based program of 15-20 girls per cohort

  • Classes meet afterschool twice a week for 1.5-2 hours or once a week for 3-4 hours (depending on location)

  • Comprehensive two-year curriculum made up of four progressive modules designed for our girls to gain proficiency in specific programming skills and add more complex projects to their portfolio over time

  • Focus teaching coding skills and introduce our girls to different programming languages appropriate for their age and experience level

  • Fun-filled, project-based coding which allow our girls to work on their critical thinking and problem solving skills while simultaneously picking up the computational and technical skills of coding

  • Promote comutational thinking, problem-solving and persistence through coding

  • Projects are self-paced, allowing students to progress through our curriculum at their own speed

  • Instruction delivered by trained staff members
